TOEFLのテストには、下記5つのセクションがあります。
1. Speaking （ スピーキング ）
2. Listening （ リスニング ）
3. Reading （ リーディング ）
4. Writing （ ライティング ）
5. Structure （ ストラクチャー、構造 ）
Structure セクションで、文法問題が出題されます。
しかし、実際にはStructureセクションだけでなく、Reading、Writing、Speaking、Listeningセクション、つまりTOEFLのテスト全体が文法のテストになっているといっても過言ではありません。
文法は、英語を正確に読む、書く、話す、聞くといった作業の基本になるものです。したがって、きちんと文法をマスターすることが、最善のTOEFL試験対策になるのです。
英語の学習を始めた頃を思い出してみてください。
こういった文を学んだ方も多いのではないでしょうか？
● The ball is round.
しかし、学習が進むにつれて文法は複雑さを増していきます。
● The ball that Tommy threw, although it appeared round, landed with a thud instead of a bounce.
上の文では、複数の動詞があります。さらに「時制の一致」という規則（ルール）が適用されています。
≪動詞に関連する質問です≫
英語には、数多くの規則があるだけではありません。それ以上に規則の例外があるのです。
➢ あなたは、英語で話をするときや文章を書くとき、動詞の形をどうやって決めていますか？

※ 短いライティング：特定の文法事項に気を配りながら文章を書きます。
※ 練習問題：文法に多く触れ、その理解を深めます。
ALS の先生は、あなたから提出された短いライティングをチェックして、文法的視点から解説をします。練習問題も同様に訂正と解説を記載して、あなたに返信します。
Preparing for the TOEFL: Grammar Problems I (TGPI)
In this first course, we will especially focus on verbs. We will review and work with both regular and irregular verbs. A brief writing exercise might be one of the following:
- Write 250 words on your day yesterday. What happened yesterday? Use at least 25 verbs to describe all the activities you engaged in yesterday.
- Write 250 words describing your future career and life plans. Where will you work? Where will you live? What will you do? Make sure to use at least 25 verbs.
- Write 250 words about the last time you traveled. Where did you go? What did you do? Did you visit anyone?
You will also be required to do exercises that involve making grammar choices, such as the following:
- Last week, Tommy _______________ to go to the store to pick up some school supplies. It wasn’t a tough ________________ to make because he had run out of paper and couldn’t finish his schoolwork without buying some more. “I’m going to the store,” he announced __________________ to his mother. (Insert the following words in their proper places in the above sentences: decision, decisively, decided.)
- Last week, after Margaret had _____________ down, she complained to her father. “I keeping _____________ all the time,” she said. “I’ve noticed that,” her father replied. “I saw you _______________ three times last week. I’m worried about you. Maybe you should stop wearing those very high heels. The last time you _____________, I thought you’d broken your ankle.” (Insert the following words in their proper places in the above sentences: fall, fallen, fell, falling.)

Preparing for the TOEFL: Grammar Problems II (TGPII)
There is so much to be learned in grammar that we could easily construct 100 courses on it! However, two is a very good start. In this second TOEFL grammar course, we will focus on other parts of language, such as pronouns and adverbs and adjectives. A brief writing assignment might require you to:
- Write 250 words about your house. Use at least 25 adjectives and 25 adverbs.
- Write 250 words about your best friend. Describe him or her so exactly that your Aaron teacher could identify your best friend if she or he saw them on the street. How tall is your friend? How do they wear their hair? What sort of clothes do they wear? What does their voice sound like? Imagine that you are painting a picture of your friend but, instead of colors, you are using words. Be very detailed, right down to the shape of the buttons on your best friend’s favorite sweater.
Drill exercises might contain sentences such as those below:
- ____ couch is a dark brown color. ____ is very comfortable, but takes up too much space in ____ living room. ____ thinks _____ might get ______ couch. (Fill in the blanks in a way that these sentences make sense. You can only use one word per blank space.)
- ____ in San Francisco is very _____. In the morning, ____ fog is at the beach but, ____ afternoon, the fog usually ____ disappeared. In ____ evening, the fog ____ again reappeared. (Fill in the blanks in a way that these sentences make sense. Again, you can only use one word per blank space.)
