What ALS Does
ALS is a San Francisco based business serving the Japanese market for translating languages to and from Japanese as well as proofreading, editing, and writing needs for English and other languages. ALS has both translators and editors who work with documents written in English and other languages by writers who lack native fluency. Clients come from government, universities, hospitals, companies in a variety of fields, self-employed individuals, teachers and students.
While based in the USA, ALS business representatives in Japan handle marketing and serve as the liaison between non-English speaking clients and the California based management. ALS assigns the editing and translation projects to independent contractors who have joined the ALS resource group.
Translators Wanted
ALS is looking for translators in all languages who can translate to and from English as well as handle other language pairs. We are also looking for native Japanese speaking translators in all languages. 日本語
Level of Editing
The Japanese market has specific demands. Over 90% of our clients do not want documents edited as if they were written by an educated native speaker of English or other target languages. They do not have the time to wait for such quality documents nor the budget required for such editing.
Instead, most of our writing work consists of going over the writing and making it understandable. We do this without spending a lot of time on it. At a minimum, ALS work will consist of the following:
- correcting the punctuation
- making sure that definite and indefinite articles are correct
- ensuring that verbs and subjects agree
- checking the spelling
- rewriting sentences when needed
The goal is that impossible sentences become comprehensible and confused documents become clear.
Still, much of the text may remain awkward. It will not look like a native speaker wrote it. If the editor does not understand part of the text, s/he would include a comment in parentheses in the text. This level of editing does not include reorganizing text or making writing pleasing to the eye. It does include deleting common unnecessary expressions such as on the other hand, furthermore, and moreover.
At ALS we offer different levels of editing. The most commonly purchased is the 'Basic'. An example showing 'Basic' and 'Basic Plus' and 'Native' can be seen here. This example is for English, but the same style would be used for other languages. Comments for other languages would normally be written in the target language, but comments in English may be requested instead.
Pay
ALS charges clients and pays editors by the source word. If editors keep the ALS goals in mind, the work pays well. If editors do more than necessary, the pay is poor!
There is a small percentage of work that is to be rewritten to higher standards and is paid accordingly.
We require that editors use the track changes function in MS Word when editing and that it shows the editor as ALS Editor. Our clients expect that the function be used, and we expect that it shows our business name. We are unable to accept or pay for work where this has not been done.
This can easily be done in under a minute by changing the user settings in MS Word.
Specialists
ALS is looking for editors with specialties in:
- technology
- IT
- medicine
- science
- law
- patents
- nanotechnology
- biotechnology
- and all other specialized fields.
Please note we do not now need generalist editors in English.
If you are a college graduate and have relevant professional and practical experience, we would like to hear from you. We do need bilingual translators in all languages.
What you will need
- a computer
- an Internet connection
- facility with MS Word
- working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint
- a phone number where you can be reached.
Subcontract Relationships and Partnerships
We would like to develop initial subcontract relationships and a resource list. After we get to know you, we are open to the possibility of entering into partnerships.
A partnership would give editors input into business development. We would expect partners to help with the content on our website. In return we would give partners all the work we get in their particular area(s) of specialty. In turn, partners would have the option of doing the documents themselves or arranging for subcontractors to complete the work. Our only concerns are:
- maintaining the quality of the work
- returning the texts on schedule
- checking email frequently
- working when work needs to be done.
For partners, instead of a specified rate per word, we would discuss a percentage split.
Should we establish a partnership with you, we would increase our presence in your field through the development of our web site content. We would do so with your assistance and through sales work in Japan that focuses on your field. A partnership, while paying significantly more than subcontracting, requires consistent and constant availability and arrangements for replacements during vacations.
How to proceed
If you are interested in subcontracting or future partnering, please send a resumé, specifying the specialist field(s) you can edit, the languages you are fluent in, and a 200 to 300 word sample of your writing to us at personnel@aaronlanguage.com.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
