Monkfish Liver - A Winter Delicacy in Japan

The monkfish liver in this picture is from Kyushu. Monkfish is also caught off the East Coast of the United States, but there has been overfishing and the fish stocks are low. The highly respected Seafood Watch at the Monterey Bay Aquarium recommends avoiding wild-caught monkfish from the U.S. Atlantic Ocean for two reasons. One is the overfishing and the other is how they are caught with bottom trawls, which can damage the seafloor habitat and accidentally catch other fish species that are then not used. Gillnets can also be used to catch monkfish, which can result in accidentally catching and killing sea turtles and marine mammals. Monkfish is also known by many other names in English including goosefish, anglerfish, angler, molligut, bellyfish, lawyerfish, and fishing frog. I hope the fishing stocks are in better shape in Kyushu.
