Japanese Jack Mackerel - What is a Jack?
If you do much reading on types of fish, the term jack will come up. Looking at Wikipedia, we found that jack can refer to any of the fishes below:
- freshwater pike, green pike or pickerel
- large California rockfish
- A group of marine fish in the Carangidae family
- Leather jack
- Crevalle jack
- Yellow jack
- Bar jack
- Island jack
- Green jack
- Black jack
- Fortune jack
- Almaco jack
- Giant trevally
- A common name for the Coho salmon
- A Jack salmon may refer to the small percentage of Salmon returning to fresh water from the ocean after only one year.
This list at Wikipedia does not include all the jacks. White trevally, for example, is missing.
Returning to this fish, the Latin name is Trachurus japonicus. The mackerel is familiar fish to Americans, although the Japanese jack mackerel may not be. We enjoy mackerel at the dining table and as recreation. The mackerel is well-known for its fighting ability and fish enthusiasts are always excited about catching mackerel.
