Sardine - Sardines and Sardinia

This sardine sushi was tasty, but when I think of sardines, I most frequently think of oily sardines in a can. This is not an attractive thought to many Americans. Sardines are named after the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean. Sardines were once found there in abundance. Sardine is not a precise name in English and refers to a young pilchard or another young and small herringlike fish. In general, fish under 10 cm long are classed as sardines, and fish larger than that are classed as pilchards, which are small fish in the herring family. We do have two names for some fish, which are child and adult names just like we have kitten and cat.
