Jumbo Fresh Shrimp 牡丹海老 英語 日本語 寿司 すし 写真 - Sushi No. 61 - Sushi and Photos with English and Japanese Names
Jumbo Fresh Shrimp - Shrimp or prawn?
If you read many of our pages, you will see that we have trouble deciding when to use Japanese and when to use English, when to use fresh and when to use raw. There is a great deal of leeway in language use. This is especially confusing when trying to determine names. We found an amazing variety of choices on the Internet for this jumbo fresh shrimp, including shrimp that is pregnant, botan shrimp, sweet shrimp, botan prawns, spot prawn, large raw shrimp, jumbo sweet shrimp, point prawn, raw spotted prawn, jumbo shrimp, and huge prawn. We also found an explanation that these jumbo fresh shrimp are simply raw pink shrimp that have grown up and are not prawns at all. This sounded very convincing to us. Not knowing, however, we spoke with the sushi chef. He said that these were not raw pink shrimp that had grown up, but that they were different. The little raw pink shrimp don't grow that big. He continued that these jumbo raw shrimp include a wide variety of different shrimp. Given that Japanese does not differentiate between shrimp and prawns, this picture could be a jumbo raw shrimp or a prawn. Depending on where you order your botan shrimp, you may be eating a prawn or a shrimp.
Prawns and shrimp are different, even though prawns look like large shrimp.
