今週の英語トピック - 2010 - The New Year is Here!
English topic of the week
Welcome to 2010! When we looked for a great photo to welcome in the New Year, we went back to 2007 when photographer Tim Gillin photographed the ice sculpture of Ilanaaq, the official mascot for the 2010 Vancouver Whistler Winter Olympic Games. Ilanaaq is an inukshuk, which is usually a stone landmark or cairn built by humans. The Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other native peoples of the Arctic region of North America use inukshuk, which can be found from Alaska to Greenland. This giant area has few natural landmarks. Thus the inukshuk can be used for navigation, points of reference, markers for hunting grounds, and as food caches. Tim tells us that the inukshuk is a traditional symbol and marker used by the Inuit people, and even appears on the flag of Nunavut.
If you are lucky enough to go to the Olympics, maybe you can see Ilanaaq in person. If not, keep an eye out if you are watching the Olympics on the television. Whatever team you are cheering for in the Olympics, we hope that 2010 is a great year for you.
