今週の英語トピック - The Rodeo

English topic of the week

By Paul Sapanio (CC)

Photographer Paul Sapanio shot this photo at a rodeo in Lakeside, California in the spring of 2009. The word rodeo comes from Spanish and is from the verb rodear, which means to surround. Rodeo can refer to a public competition or exhibition where skills such as riding broncos and roping calves are displayed. Rodeo can also refer to a cattle roundup. Lastly, rodeo can refer to an enclosure for keeping cattle that have been rounded up. Yes, this is definitely the first, a public competition or exhibition.

Long before the United States had cows and cowboys, and before the United States even existed, cowboys were herding cattle in Spain and Mexico. Later, cows and cowboys began to herd cattle in the United States, Canada, South America and Australia. Rodeo is based on the skills that the cowboys needed to do their work. Today cowboys and cowgirls compete in events including tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing. Rodeo is popular throughout the western United States and is the official state sport of Wyoming and Texas.
