今週の英語トピック - An Old Church in America
English topic of the week
Photographer Robert S. Donovan shot this picture of Trinity United Methodist in Opelika, Alabama. As he says, "No matter what you believe you have to be impressed by old churches." We are impressed with his shot of this beautiful old church in Opelika. Opelika is a city in Alabama with over 26,000 people. The first settlers who were not Native Americans arrived in this area in the late 1830s.
An older church existed at this location before this church was built, but new plans were made in 1907 for $75,000. The builders broke ground in 1907 and services started to be held in 1909. Even if you have never been to Opelika and seen the church, you may have heard Opelika referred to in a song or movie. If you saw Driving Miss Daisy, you may remember hearing Opelika mentioned. If you are a Johnny Cash fan, you may remember hearing him mention Opelika in "I've Been Everywhere." Other musical mentions come from Bubba Sparxxx, The Pine Hill Haints, Yung Envy, and Matthias Bossi of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
