今週の英語トピック - Valentine's Day and Candy Hearts

English topic of the week

By Terren (CC)

Photographer Terren shot this picture of old school candy in February of 2008. Still, as Terren tells us, the candy hearts are keeping up with the times. He can't remember getting candy with "LOL" on it for Valentine's Day back in the 70s. We can't either.

Candy with writing on it dates back to the 1860s when Daniel Chase began to print sayings on candy. Chase had designed a machine that could print the sayings. The most popular use of the candy then was for weddings. The candy hearts, which are called sweethearts, first appeared in 1902. We can still see some of the original sayings today: "Be Mine", "Kiss Me", and "Be True". As the years go by, old sayings are retired and new sayings appear.

Even if you have never seen a box of sweethearts, you may have seen or read of them in Anne of Green Gables, Friends, The Simpsons, or Eclipse, which is one of Stephenie Meyer's books about Bella and the vampires in Forks, Oregon.
