今週の英語トピック - The Million-mile Chevy

English topic of the week

How many miles does your car, truck, or SUV have on it? Or, how many kilometers? Earlier this year, Frank Oresnik drove his second-hand 1991 Chevrolet Silverado pickup to a total of 1,000,000 miles, which is 1,600,000 kilometers. He bought the truck in 1996, when it had slightly over 40,000 miles on it.

You can hear Frank driving the last few miles up to the million-mile mark and talking about his truck if you click here. While Americans tend to drive their vehicles longer than Japanese, most Americans are happy if they drive their cars for over 100,000 miles, and very pleased at over 200,000 miles. There are cars around that cross the 300,000 and 400,000 mile barriers, but there are not that many.

Frank says that the engine is original, but the truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks and five transmissions. Please click here if you would like to see what the current Chevrolet Silverado pickup looks like.

Is the Chevrolet Silverado a special pickup? Frank must have taken very good care of it for it to last a million miles. What does this tell us about our cars and trucks? Can we drive them longer? Should we? The longer you drive your car, the less money you spend on buying new cars. The longer you drive your car, the longer you spare the environment from producing all the materials needed to make a new car. The longer you drive your car, the prouder you can be about how long you made it last.

However, the longer you drive your car, the more problems emerge.
