今週の英語トピック - Record Pumpkin

English topic of the week

This week, we would like to talk about the new California pumpkin record set at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival in Elk Grove, California. A Canadian farmer, Jake van Kooten of British Columbia, won the contest with a pumpkin of over 1,500 pounds. He collected over $9,000 in prize money at the Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin and Harvest Festival.

According to festival spokesman Steve Capps, the new California record is about one pound higher than the old record. We went to the Pumpkin Nook to find out more about pumpkins and pumpkin records. The current record belongs to Joe Jutras of North Scituate, Rhode Island. On September 29, 2007, his 1689 pound pumpkin entered the Topsfield Fair GPC weigh-off in Topsfield, Ma. and was declared the heaviest pumpkin ever. The Pumpkin Nook recommends growing Atlantic Giants for farmers trying to grow giant pumpkins.

These giant pumpkins are relatively new. The 1000 pound barrier was not broken until 1996. At this rate, the 2000 pound barrier does not look that far away. With these giant pumpkins, new pumpkin carving is possible, or for the truly talented, pumpkin sculpting. Click here to see what a master sculptor can do with a giant pumpkin.

In closing, we wonder only one thing: How do the giant pumpkins taste?
