Discovery Writing
July 1, 2006
==============================
Hello: This is the 16th issue of Aaron Writes, the writing newsletter of Aaron
Language Services (ALS). We issue Aaron Writes monthly. Each issue examines
one writing topic and includes a section on business English. Our writing topic
this month covers discovery writing. Our business English section this month
covers personal information and business relationships. We hope both topics
are helpful for you.
Aaron Writes is also happy to answer reader questions. If you have questions
about writing, please email director@aaronlanguage.com in English, and we
will answer your question in a future issue of Aaron Writes. Please specify how
you would like your name signed. If you would like the letter to be anonymous,
that is fine too.

1. Writing Topic - Discovery Writing
Discovery writing is an approach to writing that teaches the writer. You may
have had the experience of writing about something that happened to you.
You may have explained the experience and then, you may have reread what
you wrote three days later. As you reread your writing, you may at first have
had a difficult time believing that you were the writer. You may have a second
reaction. You may have realized that you learned something new about the
experience through both the writing and the rereading about the experience.
In one sense, discovery writing is not so different from discovery talking. However,
we have not heard anyone use the term, discovery talking. Think of yourself
when you talk to someone you are close to. You may discover new parts of
yourself. You may say something, something you have not thought about
before. You might feel as if those words have come from someone else.
Next, you may realize that you understand something that you did not understand
before.
Discovery writing is often the kind of writing that diarists do. The world’s most
well known diarist, Anne Frank, was a master of discovery writing. Locked in the
attic in hiding, she wrote about her daily life. You would think that a thirteen year
old hiding from soldiers would have very few thoughts. You would think that
Anne was just a child. However, when you read Anne Frank’s diary, you probably
realized that Anne was not such a child. Anne created a safe world, a world that
lived in her diary. As she wrote, she put her experiences and ideas on paper. She
did not even realize that she had such ideas floating about inside her head. When
she reread what she had written, she discovered much more about herself: her
thoughts, her feelings, her ideas.
Anne wrote to Kitty, her imaginary best friend who lived in the pages of her diary.
For some discovery writers, writing to another person becomes a dialogue of
discovery. Beginning discovery writers may learn about themselves while advanced
discovery writers may learn new philosophical truths about their lives, their values,
and their desires.
If you would like to work in a discovery mode, the best way to begin is to write
about topics that interest you. Here are some suggestions:
1) Friendship
2) Love
3) Being alone
4) Work
5) Family
You may want to think about friendship or love or being alone. You may want to
explore how you spend your time with your friends, if you are a leader or a follower,
your happiness with your friends, your frustration with them, or any other topic
related to friendship. Discovery writing is an excellent approach to learning about
yourself and, at the same time, improving your writing in English.
If you could handle a homework assignment, try writing about a topic of interest to
you. Then, see what you learn.
But right now, you may be thinking that you have no idea where to start. If that is so,
then your first task in discovery writing may be freewriting. In Aaron Writes 17,
we will discuss freewriting.

2. Business English - Personal Information and Business Relationships
Japanese and American business people draw boundaries between what is
public and what is private, what is business and what is personal. Sometimes
these boundaries are very clear, and sometimes they are not. To American
observers, Japanese business people seem to avoid clearly separate business
time and personal time. Socializing for business after work hours is perhaps
the biggest example of this lack of separation.
To Japanese observers, American business people may not clearly separate
the boundaries between what is public and what is private. The personal
information used in business relationships may be the biggest example about
such vague separation. American business people often give information about
their personal lives and ask their clients about their personal lives. To many
Americans, this kind of talk is part of relationship building.
Many American business experts argue that clients want relationships the
most, even more than the best prices or the best service. We think the issue
is complicated. Some clients do want relationships, but some do not.
Here, we would like to provide examples in English used for relationship
building. We have provided two kinds of examples. Example 1, asking
about your client, is questions that you as a business person might ask
your client. Example 2, talking about yourself, is responses for you as
the businessperson serving your client. While example 1 questions are
more important, example 2 may also be necessary to provide balance.
Taking information when giving information is part of relationship building.
Example 1: asking about your client
1) How is your (son/daughter/spouse)?
2) You must be very proud that (name of son/daughter/spouse/other
family member) is studying at Yale (on the Olympic ski team, working
for the US government, etc.)
3) I imagine that Jane (Tom, Alan, Samantha) has taken her (his) first
steps (started riding a bicycle, entered elementary school, etc.)
4) Have you had time to go (fishing, camping, watch a baseball game)?
5) I was watching the Olympic swimming and I thought of you and your
interest in swimming. I hope you are still making time to go swimming.
Example 2: talking about yourself
1) My family is doing well.
2) My (daughter/son) just graduated from college.
3) We had a wonderful family trip to the Bahamas. It was great to
spend time together as a family.
4) I finally managed to take some time off and go on a fishing trip.
It was great.
Conversation is very much like dancing. If you hear fast music, you
are not going to dance slowly. In conversation, you have to notice what
the other person says and respond appropriately.

Aaron Language Services is now working online to help writers improve
their writing skills. If your goal is to improve your writing for work or
pleasure -- business, academic, or creative -- please contact Aaron
Language Services for information about the Aaron writing program.
Writing is speaking to the eyes rather than the ears. We know when we
express our thoughts well in English because people respond positively.
They listen to us. This is important for all writing, but essential for
business writing. Clear written communication helps your business
to move smoothly and grow. The better your clients and the people
you do business with understand you, the better your business will do.
Naturally, guidance in culture as well as proofreading and editing your
own writing is a key component in our business and other writing programs.
Aaron now offers a variety of writing modules focusing on business,
culture, email, and more. If you would like to discuss the possibility
of an individualized writing program, please email englishplus@aaronlanguage.com.
