Volume 17
Discovery Writing
August 1, 2006
==============================
Hello: This is the 17th issue of Aaron Writes, the writing newsletter of Aaron
Language Services (ALS). We issue Aaron Writes each month. The monthly
issue examines one writing topic and includes a section on business English.
Our writing topic this month is freewriting. Our business English section this
month is expanding your business vocabulary. We hope both are helpful for you.
Aaron Writes is also happy to answer reader questions. If you have questions
about writing, please email director@aaronlanguage.com in English, and we
will answer your question in a future issue of Aaron Writes. Please specify
how you would like your name signed. If you would like the letter to be
anonymous, that is fine too.
Contents
1. Writing topic − freewriting
2. Business English − expanding your business vocabulary
1. Writing topic - freewriting
Last month’s issue discussed discovery writing. This month’s issue is the
step before discovery writing.
Sometimes writers have difficulty getting started. Writer’s block, the inability
to write, is an ailment that some writers experience sometime during their
writing life. Freewriting is a technique that helps writers get started. If discovery
writing is difficult for you, then your first step may be freewriting.
Freewriting has three purposes.
1) Getting started
The first purpose is to get you started. Here is how to start: On your paper or
at your computer, write the sentence, Today I am...
Your writing task is to continue the sentence, and then to write another one
and another one. The only rule in freewriting is not to stop writing. Keep your
fingers moving.
No erasing.
No deleting.
No pausing to think.
Perhaps Today I am… is a little too vague for you. You may prefer one of the
following beginnings:
a) Yesterday was a terrible day because…
b) When I was a child, my…
c) I look at the sky and think about…
d) School is driving me crazy because…
e) I love my school because I always…
2) Warming up
The second purpose of freewriting is to get you warmed up. You used to play
tennis or soccer or golf or basketball. We suspect you never started a game
until you did a couple of warm up exercises. Freewriting is a warm up exercise
for writing.
3) Creating your idea database
The third purpose of freewriting is to create a database of ideas. Imagine
yourself trying to write a paper. You have no topic. You cannot think of any
single topic of interest to you. Freewriting may get you started with a number
of topics.
Here’s my freewriting:
I look at the sky and think about the Greek gods. They are crying. No, I do
not believe there are gods in the sky, but somehow, today that is what I think.
Here in San Francisco, the rain has been coming down for a couple of weeks.
I feel like a duck. Maybe it has been a couple of months. Maybe years. I am
not sure. I planned to take my camera to the park and shot pictures. This is
April. April is supposed to be spring. Where is spring? I came home last
night dripping wet. My shoes were dripping wet. My socks were dripping wet.
I had images of myself taking wonderful shots of tulips and roses and daffodils.
The Greek gods shedding salty tears made the flowers droop. Petals fell
onto the grass. I want spring to come. Last spring I remember the cherry
blossoms on Post Street in Nihonmachi. Today Jay and I stopped at a little
cafe´ for carrot soup. I know that sounds totally disgusting, but it was
delicious. As a child, I hated carrots. My mother used to make them with
lima beans. Totally disgusting. I still hate lima beans. I cannot imagine how
anyone could eat a lima bean, but I have come to love carrots. Not raw.
Cooked. I read this weird medical mystery about a man who turned orange.
His skin was orange. Understanding why he turned orange was a medical
mystery for the physician who wrote the book. Have you guessed why the
man’s skin turned orange? He was addicted to carrots, and something
in the carrots made his skin change color.
That was my freewriting. Of course, I have been doing freewriting for a
long time, and my English is fluent.
Look at all the ideas that surfaced in my freewriting. My idea database
includes topics from medical mysteries to weather, from carrots to rain,
and from the Greek gods to flowers.
Now, you are the writer. It is time for you to begin freewriting. Continue
writing. Grammar is not important. Punctuation is not important.
Even spelling is not important. You can find some mistakes in my
freewriting above. They are not important. The only goal is to keep writing.
However, you may have a number of writing topics. You may not need a
15-minute freewriting exercise. You may simply want to start writing.

2. Business English - Expanding your business vocabulary
1) Skillset
Example 1: She has the skillset for the job.
In example 1, we could have written that she has the most appropriate
background for doing the job. Instead, we used a more contemporary
term, skillset.
Your skillset is the total of your knowledge, ability, experience, and
education that allows you to do a specific job. The skillset of a photographer
is unique and not at all the same as the skillset of a police officer.
Skillset is qualifications.
Example 2: Both have the skillset to work in electronics.
Example 3: She is taking a training course now to develop her skillset.
2) Circumvent
Circumvent is a more sophisticated way of saying to go around something.
Example 1: He knows how to circumvent the delay.
Example 1 is another way of saying that he knows how to get around the delay.
He won’t have to wait because he knows how to avoid the delay.
Sometimes circumvent may have a negative implication.
Example 2: They know how to circumvent the requirements.
However, the negative feeling comes from the context. In example 2,
we do not know what the requirements are.
Example 3: They know how to circumvent the tax laws.
Depending on who they is, example 3 may be a positive or a negative statement.
3) Planned obsolescence
Planned obsolescence is a twentieth century term for the aging of products.
The life cycle of goods is limited. The makers of my five-year old car and
my two year-old computer both have newer models now in the marketplace,
and the newer models probably have more features than my current car and computer.
Another way of looking at planned obsolescence is built-in obsolescence.
Example 1: Computer manufacturers develop newer models with
planned obsolescence in mind.
Nothing is grammatically incorrect in example 1. However, the feeling is a
negative one. If you express example 1, you are saying that manufacturers
plan this aging of their products. They do so because consumers will have to
buy a newer model two or three years after their original purchase.
Example 2: Computer manufacturers develop newer models knowing that
there is a built-in obsolescence.
Example 2 has a more neutral feeling. If you hear example 2, you will probably
think, oh, okay. That’s just the way products age.

Writing is speaking to the eyes rather than the ears. We know when we
express our thoughts well in English because people respond positively.
They listen to us. This is important for all writing, but essential for
business writing. Clear written communication helps your business to
move smoothly and grow. The better your clients and the people you do
business with understand you, the better your business will do. Naturally,
guidance in culture as well as proofreading and editing your own writing
is a key component in our business and other writing programs.
Aaron now offers a variety of writing modules focusing on business, culture,
email, translation, TOEFL, and more. If you would like to discuss the possibility
