Hello: This is the 19th issue of Aaron Writes, the writing newsletter of Aaron
Language Services (ALS). We issue Aaron Writes each month. This monthly
issue examines one writing topic and includes a section on business English.
Our writing topic this month is Eudora Welty. Our business English section
this month is about memos. We hope both are helpful for you. This will be
our last business English section. From next month each issue will focus on a
single writing topic in a number of sections.

This issue of Aaron Writes would like to present two points from Eudora Welty’s
“One Writer’s Beginnings.” Eudora Welty is one of the great American writers.
If you don’t recognize her name from her writing, maybe you use the software
named after her, Eudora. Steve Dorner, the creator of the Eudora software, read
Eudora Welty’s “Why I live at the P.O.”when he was in college. He said it was a
story that he will always remember.
Eudora Welty gave a series of lectures at Harvard in 1983 on three topics. They
were “Listening,” “Learning to See,” and “Finding a Voice.”In this issue of Aaron
Writes, we would like to discuss what Eudora Welty said in “Listening,”and what
that means for us.
She talks about growing up and all the books she read. One of her main points is
that before she wrote stories, she listened for them. This is different from listening
to stories. The good writer listens both for what is spoken and what is unspoken.
Eudora Welty tells us about observing too. This is something good writers do too.
We need something to write about. Through observing the world around us, we
receive material.
There is more to being a writer than simply the mechanics of the language. There
is the process of thought, reflection, and imagination. Some of this kind of thinking
comes from inside us, but much of it comes from outside of us. The material for
what we write comes from the world around us.
As Eudora Welty tells us, we need to listen and we need to observe.

suggests that English is a second language for deaf students.
Isn’t this a beautiful memo? Look at the format, the explanation, and the call
