Hello: This is the 20th issue of Aaron Writes, the writing newsletter of Aaron
Language Services (ALS). We issue Aaron Writes monthly. Each issue examines
one writing topic, focusing on it in a number of sections. Our writing topic this month continues our conversation about Eudora Welty. We hope this issue is
helpful for you.

Eudora Welty (Part II)
This issue of Aaron Writes would like to continue discussing Eudora Welty’s
“One Writer’s Beginnings.” As we said last month, Eudora Welty gave a series
of lectures at Harvard in 1983 on three topics. They were “Listening,”
“Learning to See,” and “Finding a Voice.”In this issue of Aaron Writes, we
would like to discuss what Eudora Welty said in“Learning to See,”and what
that means for us.
“Learning to See”is a little under 30 pages and every page but the last tells
stories of her trips with her family to visit her surviving grandparents on both
sides of the family. The reader may wonder what this has to do with
becoming a writer. Eudora Welty addresses this question on the very last
page of “Learning to See.”
She writes that the trips were stories. These trips shaped her ideas of what
stories would be. She concludes that there are two kinds of chronologies.
One is the chronology of time as our lives pass by. The other is the
chronology of stories and novels. This is that of revelation.

Revelations
Revelation is what excites readers, why many readers continue to read.
They want to see what will be revealed next. During those summer trips,
Eudora Welty had a number of revelations about herself, her family, and
the world around her. Later, her own writing would use such revelations
as part of the beauty and excitement.
Think of revelations in your own writing. If you are writing a narrative in
English, think about what you reveal about yourself in your writing. Your
readers will want more than good English. They want to understand what
you say, what you did, why you did what you did. They want to look at the
world that you describe through your eyes. Revelations that you make
in your writing help your readers to see what you see.

Your epiphany
Here’s the question we would like you to ask yourself: Have you ever written
a paragraph or two and suddenly realized that you learned something about
yourself or an experience?
If you have had such an experience, you had an epiphany. You learned almost
as if the answer were inside you all the time. Perhaps your epiphany was
through writing or perhaps the epiphany happened another way. If you are
able to describe your epiphany to your readers, your readers may understand
the significance of your epiphany.
Revelations about yourself and explanations about your epiphany make your
writing richer and deeper. Thinking about revelations and epiphanies as tools
in your writing toolbox may help you as you write. As you begin to write, you
may suddenly notice that you are using a writing tool you have not used before.
You realize you needed this tool. Plus, you remember that writing is an art and
a skill. Like other arts and skills, writing requires tools, practice, and dedication.
