Welcome to the 21st issue of Aaron Writes, the Aaron Language Services (ALS)
newsletter. We publish Aaron Writes every month. Each monthly issue examines
one writing topic, focusing on the topic in a number of sections. Our writing topic
this month continues our conversation about Eudora Welty. We hope this
conversation is helpful for you.

Eudora Welty: Part III
This issue of Aaron Writes continues discussing Eudora Welty’s “One Writer’s
Beginnings.” As we said two months ago, Eudora Welty gave a series of lectures
at Harvard in 1983 on three topics. They were “Listening,” “Learning to See,”
and “Finding a Voice.” In this issue of Aaron Writes, we would like to discuss
what Eudora Welty said in “Finding a Voice,” and what that means for us.
“Finding a Voice” is Eudora Welty’s journey toward finding her voice as a writer.
She continues to talk about her life and how different influences in it helped to
shape her as a writer.
First, we’d like to discuss what writers mean when they talk about finding
their voices. Writer’s voice is a literary term that means how a writer writes.
The parts of a writer’s voice are syntax, style, character development, punctuation,
and all the other details that combine to make writing.
Let’s look at capitalization for just a minute. The poet e. e. cummings identified
himself as e. e. cummings rather than E. E. Cummings. In his poetry,
e. e. cummings used non-standard approaches to expressing himself. His grammar
was sometimes his own invention. He skipped punctuation marks or moved them
to non-standard places. This unusual approach was part of e. e. cummings’ voice.
We started with Eudora Welty because we want to discuss the writer’s voice.
However, what is important here is not what shaped her voice into the writer
she was. What is important is what shaped you.

What has shaped your writing voice? That question may be confusing in that
your writer’s voice may still be growing and emerging. You in the midst of your
life experiences have shaped your writer’s voice. If English is your second
language, you have another layer of life experience that has shaped your English writing.
Let’s look at Eva Hoffman for a minute. From her home in Poland as a
thirteen year old child, she and her family moved to Canada. Eva’s English
language ability was nil. Her life in another culture without understanding
the new language or the new culture gave her a layer of experience from which to write.
Here’s an exercise for you to explore your writing style. If you have a piece
of writing that you did at least six months ago and have not read for at least
three months, take out the writing and read it. As you read, try to distance
yourself from the writing. Try to imagine that you were not the writer.
Someone else wrote this piece, someone you do not know. Read the piece
of writing and respond to the following questions:
1. Are the vocabulary words, the punctuation, the paragraphing, and the
grammar typical or unusual?
2. Is the topic typical or unusual?
3. When you read this piece, what emotions do you feel?
After you have done this exercise, you will know a little more about your writer’s voice.
In our next issue, we’ll examine a short story and discuss what we learned
about the writer’s voice from reading the story.
